A little about Australian PT Training

Australian-trained physiotherapists enjoy a stellar reputation internationally, and are highly regarded around the world for their training and skillset. Aussie physios have contributed an outsized amount to the global body of high-quality PT literature, and many best-practice approaches to injury management can trace their origins back to Australia. Some examples:

  • Geoff Maitland – building upon the manual therapy concepts of Scandinavian PTs Cyriax & Kaltenborn, Maitland went on to develop the Maitland Method, considered today the world’s pre-eminent manual therapy system

  • Carolyn Richardson & Gwen Jull – published groundbreaking research in the mid-90’s introducing the concept of core stability and how to develop train and develop core control, and then in the early ‘00’s to revolutionize the treatment of neck disorders, including whiplash & headache

  • Craig Purdam, Jill Cook, Ebonie Rio – responsible for much of our contemporary understanding of tendon injury, by introducing the Continuum Model, clarifying diagnosis and management based on injury stage.

  • Janet Carr & Roberta Shepherd – developers of the Motor Relearning Program, one of only two primary approaches worldwide to treating patients with Neurological disorders

  • Lorimer Moseley & David Butler – revolutionized the way we understand pain with the Biopsychosocial model and how it affects the mind and body.

  • Paul Hodges, Peter O’Sullivan – pioneers and researchers in the area of back, neck & pelvic pain
